Literacy

Building a Love of Reading and Writing

At St Martin of Tours Primary School we teach English at each student’s individual point of need. We aim to provide our students with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Literacy

At St. Martin of Tours we:

  • Nurture a love of literature through sharing quality books and stories.
  • Collaboratively plan and implement a structured and comprehensive literacy program across the entire school with explicit teaching of knowledge and skills in Reading, Writing and Oral Language. Our Prep to Year 2 classes implement the Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) approach with Year 3 to 6 implementing Phormes and a text study.
  • Integrate literacy where possible in our Inquiry Learning units to ensure our experiences are real, hands-on and challenging for our students.
  • Use ongoing assessment to inform and plan for individual student needs.
  • Believe that growth in literacy is achievable through a whole school approach which ensures all students make progress and achieve success.
  • Provide learning and teaching initiatives to meet the individual needs of students.

The Literacy learning of all students is supported by the Library Resource Centre (LRC).

It’s not the curriculum that we offer that sets us apart...

Jesus taught us to love others as we love ourselves, St. Martin’s provides an environment where individuals are valued unconditionally and have respect for self and others.

St Martin’s school provides an inclusive, differentiated curriculum empowering all members of the community to be curious, self motivated learners and critical thinkers in an ever changing world.

St. Martin’s provides a challenging and safe environment where individuals work together as active members of the community, fostering respect, equity and empathy for all.

The success we attain is not only evidenced by the assessment data – but it’s seen through the smiles and joy we see on our student’s faces as a concept is grasped. This is the indefinable element that drives us as teachers to produce and grow our own teaching skills year in, year out.
